Silves used to be the old capital of the Algarve. Just a 15 minute drive from the beautiful beaches, it has a calmer more relaxed atmosphere than the coastal towns. Silves is a historical town, with its castle and cathedral and many pretty lanes to explore. Emmerse yourselves in the Portuguese culture and enjoy the many restaurants and bars that are on offer. Whether you just consider this beautiful town, your base, whilst you explore the rest of the Algarve or just choose this spot to relax, entirely up to you. This area is very popular with walkers and cyclists, you can also easily use public transport if you decide not to hire a car, to explore and there is a a boat excursion that takes you from Portimao to Silves, along the Rio Arade.
